Brigantine Reprisal Ensign American Revolutionary War Privateer and Naval Ensigns A privateer is a privately-owned warship authorized by “letters of marque” from a recognized national government to attack foreign shipping. The 13 Colonies, having declared their Independence, had only 31 ships comprising the Continental Navy. To add to this, local state governments issued Letters of Marque to privately owned merchant ships which were then armed as warships to prey on British merchant ships. Robert Morris, the first American millionaire, became wealthy by privateering, and we know that George Washington owned part of at least one privateer ship. Apparently the different ships in Commodore Hopkins’ tiny Continental Navy were identified by using stripes other that red and white. These ships flew a wide assortment of ensigns and jacks loosely based on various existing Colonial Flags. Another famous American naval vessel was the C. Ever since that time there have been fighting ships named the U. Hornet in the United States Navy, the latest being supercarriers.

However, no one alloy has emerged to replace copper as the industry standard, and alloy development is a very active area. How can you tell if your silver is Sterling? Sterling made in the USA after approximately always has a sterling mark. It can also be tested with an acid to determine its content. This should only be done by a professional. History of Sterling Silver The process of extracting and refining silver dates from the third millennium BC, and the metal was well represented in the wealth of Mesopotamia, Babylon, Egypt, classical Greece and ancient Rome.
As fashion changed over the decades and centuries, silver has been melted and reshaped into new forms, and in times of economic crisis, for individuals and nations, it has been converted into coin. Its reflective qualities have made it an ideal material for the display of power, wealth or reverence, in palaces, cathedrals, temples and the great houses of Asia, Europe and the Americas. It was during the Renaissance that silver began to become important for display: At the same time, silver was the preferred material for the wealthiest aristocratic and merchant classes.
The social, rather than the economic, aspects of silver were taking shape. Etruscan spoons dating from BC are not unlike the ones we use today, and knives were always present at the table, but it was in 16th century Italy that forks began to replace fingers for conveying food to the mouth.

Over the years, the marking disappeared on blades. Museum correspondence with sword makers such as Wilkinson and N. Meyers indicates manufacturers, primarily British, have reintroduced that marking on swords. Not the final answer but a start.
The Night of the Long Knives (German: Nacht der langen Messer (help · info)), or the Röhm Purge, also called Operation Hummingbird (German: Unternehmen Kolibri) was a purge that took place in Nazi Germany from June 30 to July 2, , when Adolf Hitler, urged on by Hermann Göring and Heinrich Himmler, carried out a series of political extrajudicial executions intended to consolidate his.
When the work was complete, the piece was heated until the resin filling melted out, leaving the now-empty piece stunningly decorated. The whole concept of a tea service, consisting of teapot, milk jug or creamer, and sugar bowl, was a British concept. Although brought by the British army and civilian patrons in India, it was a fashion adopted by Indian Anglophiles.
Based in Bhuj, in the Kutch district of Western India, Oomersi Mawji the elder was appointed court silversmith to his highness the Mahrao of Kutch, one such Anglophile who adopted the Western fashion of preparing tea with the three separate elements. This museum-quality, exquisite partridge or francolin tea service should not be considered as a set of serving vessels, but rather as sculpture. As Oomersee Mawji was wont to do in some of the animals he has depicted against foliate backgrounds, he here depicts a life-and-death struggle; in this case, a mother bird, a snake having wrapped itself around her neck, is being strangled.
Mawji was the master of animals depicted in dramatic struggles: The teapot has two double-rimmed ivory insulators, and the bases of all three birds are stabilized by the snakes beneath their feet. Mawji did not do many pieces of this type that did not bear the influence of the sentimental and flowery style of the Victorian era.

Under Mr Dos Santos, there was one golden rule for anyone who wanted to survive politically in Angola: Do not make your ambitions known.
President Dos Santos remained in charge by making sure that any potential challenger was quickly sidelined. Joao Lourenco, 63, known as JLo, who was born to a family involved in anti-colonial politics, learnt that lesson the hard way. In , the liberation war veteran and Angolan Armed Forces general was elected MPLA secretary-general – a sign that his political fortunes were on the rise.
In , as Mr Dos Santos approached 70, the succession issue became more pressing. When the president elevated his cousin, Manuel Vicente, to become vice-president, some foreign observers saw this as the anointing of Mr Vicente as a successor.

Saturday, July 29, In August there will be a big “Pioneer Days” type shindig held at a small town in the Allegheny mountains of Pennsylvania. Tribal Edge Knifeworks will be presenting a few of our blades there. I am rather excited because I really love making early American historical knives. This also allows me to call on some of my other skills, like beadwork and leather work in ways that I don’t usually get to do as often as I would like.
This legendary American fighting knife was a popular and effective sidearm dating from the early s, gaining fame with Jim Bowie in his famous Sandbar Fight and later, at the Alamo.
Full Answer Most firearms during this period were single-shot muzzle loading flintlocks. Rifles had greater accuracy but were slower to load. Muskets were quick to load but had little accuracy. Pistols were only effective at close range. During the colonial period, British troops in North Carolina commonly used the Brown Bess musket, and the colonists and natives more often used rifles or long rifles.
Colonists and natives were more familiar with knives and tomahawks for close quarter combat. Soldiers carried bayonets, long knives designed to attach to the barrel of a musket transforming it into a spear. Swords were used by British and colonial officers, and sabers were used by British and colonial cavalry. Native warriors used spears and tomahawks rather than swords or sabers. Cannons and howitzers were used by both English and colonial armies, but rarely, if ever, used by natives. There were archers among the earliest European settlers of North Carolina, as well as natives using the bow and arrow, but by the later colonial period, most settlers used muskets or rifles instead.
This introduces an interesting but obscure chapter in history, straddling Spain and France and consequently tending to be left by treatments of Spain to French history, and by treatments of France to Spanish history. Not all of it was ultimately retained by Spain, but readily accessible sources don’t seem to show either the difference between the old and new boundaries or what happened to the rulers of Navarre after the annexation — the table at right picks up at that point.
This seems like a grave oversight for the history of France. The history of Navarre is obscure enough that I found the full genealogy only with recourse to a succession of more serious and complete sources. Family trees for the Bourbons, such as given here , almost never go back further than the father, Henry, of Henry IV’s mother Jeanne. Brian Tompsett’s Royal and Noble genealogy originally enabled me to fill in the gaps, but there are some obscurities and questions in the information of both Tompsett and Hay that I had to compare with other sources.

This is a do-it-yourself procedure. When fajitas are cooked cut into small slices. Perfect compliments for this divine composition are frijoles and Spanish rice. But they don’t call them skirt steaks in San Antonio–they call the fajitas. From what I was able to learn, it seems fajitas are something of a Southern Texas–or Tex-Mex-phenomenon.
They have become popular only in the past few years, but they have become very popular. According to one meat buyer I talked to, “When I put fajitas in the ad, I’ll go through between , and a quarter of a million pounds in a week They even have fajita cooking contests in Southern Texas. I learned that the champion for the past five years was Red Gomez, a butcher from Brownsville, Texas.
